A Soft Summer Rain Today
I was jolted out of bed this morning by knocking at my door. I forgot I was taking care of Henry, the cavalier king charles spaniel for a couple of days. It was also raining. So there you have it. My morning has calmed down now that I've had breakfast coffee. Now I must prepare some oatmeal and kibble for Webster and Henry. See you later.

Blackberry Winter
Webster woke me up very early this morning barking his head off from the attic. He wouldn't stop so before he woke up the neighbors I dragged myself out of my warm, cozy bed to see what the commotion was all about and found two runaway dogs in the front yard. One was a beautiful wet, muddy chocolate lab and the other was a yellow lab also wet and both were starving. I called the number on their tags and the owner came right over. She said they had been out all night and she was so happy they were okay and that I called her before the police found them. It was so chilly outside before 6am I could hardly believe my eyes. The temperature was in the 50s and right now at 9:15 am it's only 61° -- a true blackberry winter. I'm not complaining either because it feels wonderful and I feel energized in spite of my lack of morning slumber time. I hope your heat wave is over too. See you later.

The Breeze Blowing Through My Window

We finally have a cool front and there is a delightful breeze blowing through all of my open windows here at the cottage. This 1947 tempera painting entitled Wind from the Sea by Andrew Wyeth is the perfect illustration for what I'm feeling on my face right now. It's perfect sleeping weather too. Sweet dreams, see you tomorrow.

Weekend at The Lake House
It's five o'clock. Let the weekend begin. What a great deck and seating arrangement -- teleport me there now. That lake looks so refreshing, doesn't it? via

Blue Chicory and Hot Sun
I have a whole field of these blue chicory weeds. The blooms close up and go to sleep at the end of the day and all you see is stalks. Today is supposed to be the hottest day of our heat wave so we will get in our longer walks early. Stay cool.

Outdoor Shower Ideas
Nothing says summer like an outdoor shower.
Do you have a favorite? There are more choices here. Stay cool and shower outside if you can. That's one of life's simple pleasures and dogs like them too.

Gorgeous Tree Lined Drive

I love the way the sun is shining through the trees in this photo. It's simply lovely. It looks hot there just like it is here. We won't be out of mid-90° weather until Sunday. Texas stole my weather and sent theirs up here. I heard on the news last night that the high yesterday in Houston was only 72° which sounds more like San Francisco weather. It's crazy everywhere, isn't it? Webster is much, much better but he is still resting. Animals know what to do when they are feeling low and they don't rush getting up unless it's absolutely necessary. He's such a good dog. See you later. via

Lovely Bicycles
I've never seen bikes with pick tires but I like them. It's much cooler this morning and I'm so happy. Now maybe my stiff neck from the air conditioning will go away. It feels better already since I turned the air off last night and slept with the windows open. Have a great Sunday. via

Hello Summer 2013
We are still having cool nights and I'm sitting here wearing a chamois shirt because it's 58° and feels quite chilly. Tabitha is a good gauge of the temperature because she didn't want to stay outside. She positioned herself in the front yard where she could see me and started the stare-down until I let her back in. She is curled up in her cat basket now that she has successfully spoiled my endeavor to sleep until at least 7:00 every morning.
I took this photograph with my iPhone from my balcony one day recently after our long spell of rainy days. I added the rays by playing around with effects and I really have no idea what I did but I like it. Happy first day of summer - the longest day of the year. I'm already planning my afternoon nap but maybe my morning coffee will kick in soon and I'll feel more awake. See you later.

Perfect Farmhouse

Pleasant Valley - John B. Murray, Architect. Bruce Buck photo. Let's ring the bell and see if we can go inside, shall we? Have a wonderful weekend -- there's no rain today here at the cottage. I can hardly believe it!!!

Finally, We See the Sun

We still have some dark clouds for the sun to hide behind, but when it comes out it is a glorious sight to behold after two days of torrential rain. More is on the way and the weather people say this year's month of June is on its way to becoming the wettest one in history. April was the second driest in history. There is no such thing as predicting the weather nowadays, is there?
Tabitha is catching up on eating the special tough grass she loves. Have a great weekend. my iPhone photos

Raindrops on my window
It is getting brighter outside and the rain has subsided somewhat. Maybe the two solid days of rain that have been predicted will blow over and the forecast will change. Or maybe it won't. We are all having a lazy day so far at the cottage. Tabitha is curled up in a tight ball on my unmade bed and Webster is stretched out at my feet. I haven't done anything productive yet except run around closing windows. I think I should try to do something meaningful soon. my iPhone photo

Rainbow over My Cottage Yesterday

It was really a double rainbow as you can see from the upper right corner but I was on my balcony and couldn't get far enough away to get both on my iPhone. I think it was a good omen for my new listing yesterday. The owner got a great shot on her phone and until I saw hers I didn't even know it was a double one. That means good luck for both of us, right?

My Missing Trees
As you can see the three trees I took down after Hurricane Sandy were at the end of their life spans. I was worried that I would miss them and that my balcony would get too hot in the summer. They were hollow in the middle and had some sort of fungus. I decided to have them cut down for peace of mind after one of the giant trees in the woods came down and hit my balcony railing and grazed the house. I still get very nervous when there are high winds.
It has turned out so much better than I ever imagined because my wonderful view has opened up the big sky. I love sitting outside at night enjoying the stars. The angle of the sun is never too intense and the house ends up shading the balcony as the sun moves to the west after lunch. I had the stumps ground but I never planted grass seed. I'll seed the three bare spots in the fall and next year it will be perfect. I might transplant some clover that is growing in my gravel driveway for some instant ground cover that should spread nicely. I took the bottom photo just a few minutes ago on this fabulous Sunday morning. Tabitha got me up a few minutes after 6:00 so I put her outside with her food dish. Poor Webster had to wait for me to get up again to be fed. I went back to bed and didn't get up until 9:00. It was wonderful to sleep without a cat poking me to wake up. Enjoy this beautiful day.

Rain Beaten Peonies

The unrelenting rain of the past two days really did a number on my peonies. They will look better when I trim them and pick up the fallen petals. I'm so glad it finally stopped. It is still very overcast but the sun is supposed to shine brightly later. If it doesn't, that will be fine as long as it doesn't rain again. Enough is enough. Hark---I see the sun and it's beautiful. Have a great weekend.

Wet Dog
I did this very thing to Webster this morning when he came in from the soft summer rain. It's so much cooler and it smells like mountain air with the doors and windows open again. We enjoyed the A/C but we are fresh air lovers here at the cottage. via
